This page explains some of the basics of how PPO plans work and how our team can help you get the most out of your policy.

How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance is a great investment when it comes to ensuring the health and future of your smile. With preventive and restorative services receiving full or partial coverage, you can expect less to come out of your wallet should you require dental checkups and cleanings, fillings, crowns, root canals, or even tooth extractions.

A PPO dental plan allows its policyholders to visit any licensed dentist and still use their benefits. Coverage rates are usually something like this:

  • Preventive care: 80 – 100 percent covered
  • Minor restorative care: 50 – 70 percent covered (after a waiting period of 6 – 12 months)
  • Major restorative care: 40- 50 percent covered (after a waiting period of 6 – 12 months)

What is the Difference Between Dental and Medical Insurance?

Although it might seem as if both types of insurance are the same, they are vastly different. Medical insurance provides financial assistance after an incident occurs. For example, you break your arm, you are preparing to have a baby, or you need to be hospitalized for a serious illness.

Dental insurance, however, delivers maximum savings when it comes to prevention. Dental checkups and cleanings and other similar services designed to reduce the chances of common oral health problems lend greater savings.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

Knowing the difference between in-network and out-of-network dentists is important, as one will save you more money when requiring oral healthcare.

In-Network Coverage

When you’re reviewing the details of your plan, you’ll see some information about its network. If a dentist is in-network with your plan, that means they have a contract with the insurance company. They’ve agreed to certain prices for their services, and they’ve agreed to use certain techniques and materials when treating patients.

Dr. Cowell is currently in-network with Cigna PPO dental insurance.

Out-of-Network

If a dentist is not in-network, these percentages may vary slightly. However, our office is more than happy to verify your dental benefits, as we accept and process out-of-network claims as well.

Dental Insurance FAQs

How Can I Get the Most Out of My Policy?

One way you can get more value out of your dental insurance in DeLand is by visiting us every six months for a cleaning and checkup. You’ll pay little to nothing out of pocket for this essential preventive service. You can also ask our team for tips on how you can get more out of your annual maximum (the most that insurance will pay out in a year).

What if My Insurance Doesn’t Cover a Needed Procedure?

If your dental insurance doesn’t cover a procedure that Dr. Cowell recommends, or if you need some restorative treatment done before your insurance’s waiting period is over, our team can help you apply for low- or no-interest financing.

Is There Anything I Can Do if I Don’t Like My Insurance Plan?

One of the major differences between dental insurance and health insurance is that you can shop for dental insurance at any time. If you find a plan that offers better out-of-network coverage, you should be able to purchase it right away. If you’ve already had dental insurance for a while, your new plan might even waive your waiting period.
